Bars until late
Malasaña at night
In short
Malasaña nightlife is bars, small rooms and a crowd that lives nearby. It is not where Teatro Kapital or Gabana are. Use it from midnight to 1:30am, then either stay or leave for a club in Sol, Chueca or further out. The streets are the plan.
What to do in Malasaña
Walk. The grid north of Gran Vía, around Calle del Pez, Espíritu Santo and San Vicente Ferrer, is dense enough that you do not need a reservation for a first drink. It gets loud on Thursday and Friday. It is a bad place to stay if you want to sleep, and a good place to stay if you want to fall out of a bar and into bed.
The nearest proper clubs in this guide are Joy Eslava, downhill toward Sol, and Teatro Barceló or Mondo Disko, toward Chueca. Both are a walk early and a taxi late.

Questions people ask
Is Malasaña good for nightlife?
Yes, if you want bars. No, if you want a megaclub on the same block. People who say Malasaña was disappointing usually expected Kapital.
Is Malasaña safe at night?
It is busy, which helps. Normal city rules: watch your phone, do not leave a drink, use a licensed taxi if you are leaving the neighbourhood after the metro.
