Madrid nightlife starts after midnight
In short
Madrid nightlife is late, nightly, and split by neighbourhood. Dinner is 9:30–11pm, bars fill after midnight, and clubs are busy from about 1:30am until 5–7am. The weekend starts on Thursday. Malasaña and Chueca are for bars. Huertas, Sol, Chueca’s Teatro Barceló, Salamanca and Chamartín are for clubs.

Where the night is
What time does Madrid go out?
A normal Madrid night
- 9:30–11:30pm
- Dinner. Kitchens are still open. Clubs are not.
- 11:30pm–1:00am
- Bars, terrazas, a first copa. This is the walkable part.
- 1:00–1:30am
- Metro closes. Move to the club or stay in the barrio.
- 1:30–4:00am
- Clubs fill. Arriving at midnight means an empty room.
- 5:00–7:00am
- Most discotecas close. Churros are the last stop, not a club.
Is Madrid good for nightlife?
Yes. In 2025 Time Out’s reader ranking put Madrid first in Europe for going out, behind only Las Vegas worldwide. The reason is not one famous club. It is that the city goes out on a Thursday the way other cities go out on a Saturday, and it stays open past dawn. Barcelona is the usual comparison: Barcelona is stronger for beach clubs and big electronic weekends; Madrid is stronger for a random weeknight.
Madrid nightlife areas
Pick the area before the club. A Malasaña bar crawl and a Chamartín club night are not the same plan, and after 1:30am you cannot hop between them on the metro.

Where is the best area for nightlife in Madrid?
Malasaña and Chueca for bars. Sol and Huertas for the classic big clubs. Salamanca, Colón and Chamartín for a smarter door. There is no single best street.
Is Madrid nightlife better than Barcelona?
For an ordinary Thursday or a late club that is not a beach venue, Madrid. For a destination electronic weekend by the sea, Barcelona or a day trip out of it. See the comparison page.
Is Madrid safe at night?
The central barrios are busy and walked, which is the main safety feature. Use licensed taxis after the metro, watch phones on Sol and Gran Vía, and do not leave a drink. Detail is on the safety page.
What should I wear out in Madrid?
Bars: whatever you wore to dinner. Clubs: smart-casual, and smarter in Salamanca and Chamartín. Sportswear is the thing that fails the door.
